Client & Context

National Geographic commissioned a promotional piece to support the release of Season 13 of Car S.O.S.

The concept centered around the two presenters “driving” four different cars — represented by fabricated models designed to resemble the originals, while clearly not being the real vehicles. The humor lay in this balance: convincing enough to recognise, but intentionally tongue-in-cheek.

The piece needed to feel playful and self-aware, while maintaining the production standards associated with both the programme and the broadcaster.

The Challenge

Although contained within a studio environment, the production required precision and control.

Key considerations included:

  • Designing lighting suitable for compositing
  • Delivering cinematic image quality within a controlled environment
  • Ensuring the humour translated visually without feeling low-grade

The aim was not to disguise the artifice, but to present it with confidence, allowing the humour to land without compromising technical quality.

Our Approach

Supporting the Comedy

With the fabricated cars forming part of the joke, performance and framing were central.

We worked closely with the presenters to refine physical movement, eye-lines and timing, ensuring the “driving” sequences felt energetic and deliberate. Camera positioning and movement were designed to enhance the humour rather than hide the mechanics.

The result was a piece that embraced its own construction — while still feeling polished.

Technical Discipline

The production was captured on the RED Raptor paired with Zeiss Supreme lenses, selected for their precision, consistency and cinematic rendering.

Lighting was carefully shaped for greenscreen compositing, maintaining clean separation while preserving natural skin tones. Even within a comedic concept, the technical foundation remained disciplined and robust.

Our experience with digital cinema workflows ensured the material integrated smoothly into post-production.

Control Within the Studio Environment

The studio setting allowed for complete visual control. Exposure, colour, lensing and camera movement were managed with compositing in mind from the outset.

This balance of playful concept and technical control ensured the final piece felt intentional and well-crafted, rather than improvised.
