Colosseum: Rise and Fall
TV Series Promo
- Production
A cinematic promotional campaign exploring the history of the Colosseum, combining miniature practical filmmaking with programme sync and archival content.
Client & Context
Commissioned to promote a series uncovering the reality of Rome’s most iconic landmark, the creative centred on the Colosseum itself — not merely as architecture, but as a stage for human drama.
The campaign needed to feel epic in scale while remaining precise in detail. Gladiators, new archaeological discoveries, and the brutal history of the arena were to sit at the heart of the narrative.
The tagline — “Brick by brick, blood for blood, the Colosseum rises.” — informed the tone from the outset.
The Challenge
The brief required something cinematic and atmospheric, yet flexible enough to adapt to potential production restrictions.
Key considerations included:
- Capturing the epic scale of the Colosseum within a controlled environment
- Representing gladiatorial combat in a stylised but credible way
- Integrating newly discovered historical details, including evidence of bear remains and gladiator training schools
- Creating multiple deliverables from a single shoot
The ambition was to present the Colosseum as frozen in time: intimate in detail, monumental in feeling.
Our Approach
Building the Arena in Miniature
Rather than relying solely on digital environments, we constructed a scaled physical model of the Colosseum.
The structure was cut from polystyrene, with detailed 3D-printed elements and figures — including a gladiator facing a lion — forming the centrepiece of the scene.
This tactile, practical approach allowed for authentic light interaction and texture, creating depth that would be difficult to replicate artificially.
Cinematic Perspective Through Precision
The miniature set was filmed using a probe lens to achieve dynamic, immersive perspectives that exaggerated scale and detail.
A motion control slider and head provided precise, repeatable movements. This ensured smooth cinematic motion while allowing for multiple passes and exact shot replication where required.
The combination of macro optics and controlled movement gave the model a sense of monumentality — transforming a scaled structure into something visually epic.
Integrating Story & Discovery
Programme sync was woven through the campaign to build a narrative around the gladiators and the arena itself. References to recent discoveries added intrigue and authority.
By blending miniature practical cinematography with existing show material, the final assets felt cohesive and purposeful.
