A series of films documenting the experiences of patients living with Factor X deficiency, highlighting how specialist treatment can support daily life while providing medical insight from leading haemophilia clinicians.
Client & Context
Commissioned by a pharmaceutical company developing a treatment for Factor X deficiency, the films were designed to communicate both the human and clinical aspects of the condition.
Each story focused on a patient living with the disorder, alongside interviews with their specialist haemophilia doctor. The aim was to balance personal experience with expert insight, helping audiences understand both the realities of living with the condition and the role of modern treatment.
Two films were produced: one filmed in Bonn, Germany (German language) and the other in London, England (English).
The Challenge
The production required careful handling of both medical subject matter and international logistics.
Key considerations included:
- Conducting sensitive patient interviews in different languages
- Enabling agency and client teams to monitor the shoot remotely
- Maintaining a comfortable and natural environment for interviewees
- Capturing both personal stories and clinical context
- Creating visual material that reflected the daily lives of each patient
It was essential that the films felt authentic and respectful, allowing patients to share their experiences openly.
Our Approach
Creating Comfortable Interview Environments
For the London shoot, a house location was hired rather than filming in the patient’s family home. This ensured privacy while still providing a natural, domestic environment.
Both interviews used a mirror interview technique, allowing the patient to see the director while maintaining direct eye contact with the camera. This approach creates a more intimate and engaging connection for the audience.
Supporting International Production
The German interview was conducted in German, with a live translator relaying communication between the interview subject, the director, and the remote agency team.
Both shoots were equipped with remote viewing systems, allowing the client and agency to observe the filming in real time while maintaining clear communication with the production team.
This setup ensured collaborative oversight without disrupting the interview environment.
Building Human Stories Through Observational Footage
Alongside the interviews, we captured b-roll sequences reflecting each patient’s everyday life.
These moments provided context and emotional texture to the films:
- In Germany, the patient enjoyed walking, so we filmed sequences in nearby woodland environments.
- In London, the patient spent time with family and shared a passion for cycling, both of which were incorporated into the visual narrative.
Interviews with each patient’s specialist haemophilia doctor added a clinical perspective, helping audiences understand the condition and the role of treatment.
