An in-depth interview with England manager Thomas Tuchel, exploring leadership, consistency and preparation within high-performance environments, filmed for E.ON Next’s Power Players content series.
Client & Context
For the Power Players series, E.ON Next explores how leadership and performance operate within different high-performing systems.
In this episode, Sky Sports presenter David Garrido interviewed Thomas Tuchel, England’s national football manager, drawing parallels between leadership in elite sport and the values that underpin resilient energy systems.
Filmed at St. George’s Park, the FA’s national football centre, the conversation focused on themes including leadership consistency, decision-making under pressure and building long-term success.
The Challenge
The production required careful preparation due to strict time constraints.
Key considerations included:
- Capturing a structured interview with a high-profile subject within a one-hour filming window
- Producing both in-depth discussion segments and lighter quick-fire content
- Creating a visually engaging interview environment within an active training facility
- Ensuring the conversation flowed naturally while covering complex leadership themes
The aim was to maximise the available time with the interviewee while maintaining a polished and thoughtful visual presentation.
Our Approach
Preparing the Visual Language in Advance
Given the limited time available with the interview subject, extensive preparation was essential.
AI-supported pre-vis tools were used during pre-production to explore possible lighting setups, camera angles and interview configurations within the location. These mock-ups allowed the production team to refine the visual approach ahead of the shoot.
By resolving these creative decisions early, the on-site production could focus on performance and conversation rather than experimentation.
Structured Interview Capture
The interview was designed in two distinct segments.
The first focused on in-depth leadership questions, exploring Tuchel’s philosophy on consistency, team culture and decision-making at the highest level of football.
The second adopted a more relaxed tone, featuring quickfire questions that revealed personal habits, motivations and reflections on leadership.
This structure allowed the final film to balance thoughtful insight with moments of personality and spontaneity. As well as providing multiple deliverable formats from one shoot.
Efficient Location Production
With only one hour available, the shoot was carefully scheduled to ensure both interview formats could be captured efficiently.
Lighting, framing and camera placement were prepared in advance, allowing the team to transition smoothly between segments while maintaining a calm environment for the interview.
The result was a focused production that maximised both time and access.
